Hiking Boots

Gone are the days of six-pound leather day hikers. There’s now a specific hiking boot for every kind of backcountry walking – from light trail walks to ankle-straining treks -- and for every shape of foot.

If an easy walk in the woods is your game, go for a pair of lightweight hiking shoes -- also known as low-cut or mid-cut boots, or trail shoes. When you’re backpacks are loaded with more than 25 pounds, or you are traversing harsh terrain on longer treks, you’ll want the added protection and foot support of a full-sized hiking boot -- with a stiffer sole, beefier tread, and thick upper. In between the two is a class known as a midweight hiker, which combines the best of both worlds – moderate support and protection, while keeping the weight generally below four pounds (per pair).

Since your hiking boots are arguably your most important piece of gear in the backcountry, it pays to stick with brands with established reputations and rigorous pre-production testing regimens.

Salomon shoes and The North Face offer all three classes of hiking boot, most of which incorporate a waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex liner in the upper to seal out water but vent sweaty moisture, and a toothy Vibram outsole for serious grip.

Montrail specializes in fast-on-your-feet lightweight and midweight hiking boots that can still handle a load, while Nike’s line of hiking shoes and boots borrow technical elements from its mainstream athletic lines, like Air cushioning pockets to soften heel strike.

Since each of these brands are built for the long haul, picking one is a matter of personal fit and preference. Early on, break in your shoes on carpet, so you can return them if the fit isn’t exactly what you need.

With advances in midsole construction and moisture wicking liners, and more options for the right fit, today’s hiking boots are more comfortable than ever. Just don’t forget to take them off before getting in your sleeping bag.
